It seems that the four men went to Pakistan for a friend’s wedding. When they got there, they decided that they would go to Afghanistan to see what was going on there. It was just after 9/11 and they were eager to learn more about the conditions in the country. They hoped they might meet some of the locals and even form some positive relationships during their exploration. They ended up at the wrong place at the wrong time and were involved in a skirmish that ended with several people being placed under arrest, including three of the four men. Nothing is known to this day about what happened to the fourth.

The three men ended up in a prison in Afghanistan and were then shipped to Guantanamo Bay where they endured constant psychological and physical torture. What’s amazing is that the three survived their ordeal for three years and were finally absolved of any wrongdoing. Even though it could be proved that they had been in England at the times they were accused of meeting with Osama Bin Laden, it still took that long for them to be released.

At the end of the film, we see three older, mature men walk away from the prison. It’s unbelievable to think that this is a true story. It kind of makes the stories you see on Bridezilla make you want to vomit, doesn’t it? We’re very lucky to live in the part of the world that we do and to have the freedoms and wonderful opportunities that we do. It’s also wonderful to see that no matter what’s going on anywhere in the world, love still exists and there will be as many Muslim brides in war-torn areas as anywhere else in the world.

There’s a common misconception that all wealthy people like to stick together. Milan Kundera once wrote that the form of a relationship is decided in the first couple of days. What he means is that our conception of who a person is and the patterns we use to interact with them are formed far more quickly than we realize and that people tend to be confused or let down when the other person seems to change or demands some kind of change.

OK, so I’ve managed to take a very poetic account of human relationships and butcher it. In any case, the point I’m trying to make is that whether or not you develop healthy dating relationships that you can sustain depends rather heavily on the groundwork you set up early on. The problem is that when a relationship is new you’re so enamored with the possibilities it creates that you’re off your guard, and you’ll likely compromise in pretty much any way you can, because you give the other person the benefit of the doubt.

She nice, funny, smart and you find it easy to communicate with her, but she also has an extremely annoying propensity for being absurdly late that drives you up the wall. If anyone else kept you waiting somewhere for 45 minutes without so much as a phone call, you’d rightly be mad at them. With this new lady, however, you imagine all the possible reasons, decide to give her the benefit of the doubt and let it go because it seems too early to start commenting on another person’s behavior. In one sense, that’s the only sane thing to do. On the other hand, it’s tantamount to saying that it’s OK to be absurdly and unapologetically late. You give people an inch, they take a mile.

Relationships seem to be a game controlled by who cares the least. Whoever is less interested in maintaining the relationship or is the least tolerant or willing to adapt to the other person gets to decide the parameters of the relationship. It seems like a bad way of doing things to me, but, I suppose, that’s just how the game is played.

Guys will try to meet chicks at the weirdest places. I have a friend who used to hang out at Ikea for love. He didn’t get much love that way. He also hung around Home Depot and places like that, thinking that if he had the right pick-up line at the right time with the right girl, he’d be able to get some good, good lovin’, but it just never worked out. Their meeting is a bit of a strange story. My friend wasn’t exactly looking to meet a beautiful deaf girl specifically. Sometimes I’m taken aback to realize how far we failed to come in our understanding of interpersonal relationships and the sexuality behind them. In the ’50s Alfred Kinsey produced a groundbreaking study called “Sexual Behavior in The Human Male,” which attempted to shed some light on what was going on behind closed doors that our conventional conceptions of sexuality wouldn’t let us see. In a section discussing homosexuality he wrote that “not all things are black nor all things white,” arguing that “only the human mind invents categories and tries to force facts into separated pigeon-holes. The living world is a continuum in each and every one of its aspects.”

His point being that while who or what we desire is telling about who we are, that doesn’t mean those desires can be used to categorize us according to rigidly defined types. He went on to say that “the sooner we learn this concerning human sexual behavior, the sooner we shall reach a sound understanding of the realities of sex.” In true adult dating situations, people should only worry about the individuals involved and whether the relationship is positive, not about how the relationship will define them in the eyes of an over-generalizing society.

It’s a bit of a kicker. I really would’ve liked to get to know that girl. She was definitely one of the best black babes I’ve ever met. Cool, stylish, brilliant funny… the whole thing.
