There are more than a few things that can go wrong when getting married, but can you imagine if you were on your way to see your friend marry his Muslim bride, and then were falsely accused of being a terrorist and sent to prison for three years? This is the subject of a recent film called “The Road to Guantanamo” that explores the best and worst in human nature. It also gives us a glimpse into the lives of a few men that could just as easily have been on a Muslim dating site as involved in a debacle like this.

It seems that the four men went to Pakistan for a friend’s wedding. When they got there, they decided that they would go to Afghanistan to see what was going on there. It was just after 9/11 and they were eager to learn more about the conditions in the country. They hoped they might meet some of the locals and even form some positive relationships during their exploration. They ended up at the wrong place at the wrong time and were involved in a skirmish that ended with several people being placed under arrest, including three of the four men. Nothing is known to this day about what happened to the fourth.

The three men ended up in a prison in Afghanistan and were then shipped to Guantanamo Bay where they endured constant psychological and physical torture. What’s amazing is that the three survived their ordeal for three years and were finally absolved of any wrongdoing. Even though it could be proved that they had been in England at the times they were accused of meeting with Osama Bin Laden, it still took that long for them to be released.

At the end of the film, we see three older, mature men walk away from the prison. It’s unbelievable to think that this is a true story. It kind of makes the stories you see on Bridezilla make you want to vomit, doesn’t it? We’re very lucky to live in the part of the world that we do and to have the freedoms and wonderful opportunities that we do. It’s also wonderful to see that no matter what’s going on anywhere in the world, love still exists and there will be as many Muslim brides in war-torn areas as anywhere else in the world.
